Hoodia Gordonii seeds are unique in themselves. They are light brown in color. The seeds are flat and have a pappus of fluffy hair attached at one end. This "hair" acts as a parachute when the seeds split open. With the pappus, the seeds can be blown and travel quite a distance from the parent plant. This enables them to establish themselves in sandy soil with good drainage. Being protected by the branches of a nurse plant from the sun and strong rays, the seeds will germinate and grow.
The Hoodia Gordonii plant can withstand and thrives in extreme heat. While it can withstand temperatures exceeding 115 degrees, it actually thrives in temperatures around 90 degrees. The plant can also withstand low temperatures of around 30 degrees, but only for shorter amounts of time.
Flowers appear on the top part of the Hoodia Gordonii plant, no matter how mature it is, from August through September. The flowers vary in color, an put off a very bad smell that has been described as the smell of rotten meat.
Hoodia Gordonii can grow pretty rapidly once they begin the process. In the first year, one tiny spear is produced, but within the next two to three years, it can produce up to 10 spears. As the plant matures, the quicker it grows. In five to eight years, the Hoodia Gordonii plant can produce up to 50 spears, as well as weigh over 130 pounds. When the plant reaches four to five years old, harvesting can begin. Around 1/3 of the plants stems are cut during harvest, leaving plenty of plant left to rejuvenate and produce again for the next harvest.
Once the stems are cut from the plant, they are bagged and transported to a processing plant. Inside the plant, the Hoodia Gordonii is washed and dried. The stems are then sliced into chips, or shredded, enabling it to dry until totally moisture free. The dried Hoodia is milled into a fine powder and irradiated to kill any harmful bacteria that may be present. Afterwards, it is bagged and ready for export to North America.

Once all the material permits and reports are verified, the material is shipped to a Pharmaceutical plant for encapsulation. The facility has been licensed by teh Federal and State governments for the production of Pharmaceuticals and other over the counter health products. Here, at this facility, the Hoodia is unpacked and encapsulation is performed in a clean room. This is where the pure Hoodia Gordonii is put into 100% green vegetarian capsules, with no fillers, as well as no additives or preservatives.
